The news of the exit of Rafa Benitez from Newcastle came as a surprise to many after he had led the club to 10th position last season. It had been expected that Newcastle was preparing to offer the 54-year-old an offer that would extend his three-year stay at the club.

However, this proved to be in vain as the Spaniard chose to move to Chinese club Dalian Yifang which was a massive surprise. There had been speculations that Benitez had rejected Newcastle due to financial reasons.

However, Benitez has reacted to such reports in a recent post where he highlighted that the club was at fault for the breakdown in negotiations. According to him, Newcastle made an offer to extend his contract which was without any noticeable change in value. The club also wanted him to sign a contract that would limit his control over transfers.

Benitez also noted that while other members of the team were paid bonuses at the end of the season. The club defaulted to pay him and his backroom staff any bonuses, furthermore Newcastle had also broken promises of transfer targets made to him when he signed three seasons ago.

This revelation from Benitez paints Newcastle in a bad light and the club continues to wallow in mediocrity with owner Mike Ashley at the helms of affairs.

Benitez had good words for the fans and urged them to back new manager Steve Bruce as the club looks to have a successful season. Former Newcastle ace Jermaine Jenas reacted to the revelation from Benitez and urged the club to do better with Steve Bruce.

Newcastle lost their first game of the season to Arsenal on Sunday and would be hoping to get off the mark against newly promoted Norwich City on Saturday.
