Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas believes that Manchester City’s major signing of the summer – Raheem Sterling – will become one of the best players in world in the next few years.
The decision taken by Sterling to force his way out of Liverpool has left a lot of fans extremely pleased with the winger. However, he is turning out into a great acquisition for City. He has so far presented a massive leap in terms of quality over his replacement James Milner, who has moved the other way and joined Liverpool on a free transfer.
Jenas is of the opinion that Sterling can be sure of a place in the England squad for Euro 2016 if he continues in the same pace of development. Some have questioned the quality of the 21-year-old after a mediocre campaign with Liverpool, but Jenas is that it is largely because of the increased pressure caused by the departure of Luis Suarez. He has started his career with City in decent fashion after helping the team with a goal and an assist so far. He is expected to continue in this rich vein of form even after the arrival of Kevin De Bruyne for an even bigger transfer fee. The Belgian international has cost the club an astonishing £ 55 million.
“Raheem Sterling will be in the England Euro 2016 starting XI. Last year was a tough one for Raheem. He was looked upon to take the mantle once Luis Suarez left Liverpool, and then Daniel Sturridge was injured. There is a more of freedom in his play at Manchester City. He’ll go from strength to strength playing in this City side,” said Jenas, who has retired from football due to a string of injuries. Sterling, though, has been left out of the Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino due to lack of rest.
