Newcastle United recently created headlines by completing the expensive purchase of Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City for more than £ 12 million.
This was certainly a huge gamble from the team given that they have been flirting with relegation throughout the campaign. After having already experienced the worst of relegation only a few years ago, Newcastle were not expected to spend so heavily in the January transfer window. Furthermore, they have decided to go for a young player with limited experience in the Premier League. The former Liverpool midfielder is undoubtedly a great talent, but he has failed to deliver at big clubs in the past.
Even at Swansea, he has been a hit or miss in most of the games. However, he provided the biggest answer to his critics by playing an impressive role in his debut against West Ham. The Geordies were simply blown away by the impressive performance of the team. After struggling to score goals throughout the campaign, the club has now got five in the last two games. Ayoze Pérez and Wijnaldum were on the scoresheet for Newcastle inside the 15 minutes. Interestingly,Shelvey played a huge role in their goals to assert himself as a fan favourite almost immediately.
Former Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas claims that he is extremely pleased with what Newcastle put on the pitch. He also reserved special praise forShelvey.“All eyes on Jonjo Shelvey – how would he fit into the team, what he would bring to the team….and it was a brilliant debut.I felt that he had some great passing, forward passes especially. Him and Jack Colback worked very well together.Everything was going through him. They just wanted to get him on the ball as much as they possibly can. He’s always trying to be progressive, get the ball forward and get his team up the pitch,” said Jenas.
